Potiphar

Tomorrow we will block the Potiphar scene.   Ms. Waterhouse and I will work together to mesh the dancy bits and the acting bits.  We need Narrators, Joseph, Potiphar, Mrs. Potiphar, and her two ladies in waiting. I assume the rest of you are working with Walters, but I'll let Waterhouse explain that at the start of rehearsal.

The Potiphar scene has been done many ways.  Originally the wife just saunters about with her harem, pulling clothes off Joseph.  The revival made it 1920s style and had the wife dance about much more aggressively to conquer Joseph.

We're going to keep it rooted in modern jazz.  Nothing too complicated her.  Some vamping, some pointing and kicking.  It's a super short piece really.

Inspiration, huh?  Well, as far at the intent of the scene, enjoy this clip from Singin' in the Rain (my All Time Most Favorite Movie).  In this extended dream ballet sequence, Gene Kelly plays the naive country boy come to the city for success, and encounters the leggy Cyd Charisse.   Look how she plays sexual power without being overtly erotic.  Look how Gene Kelly handles a women a full head taller than himself.

But in our version, with our bumbling wife in drag and PG sensibilities, we might skew a little more like this.
